The driver of a lorry that was blown over in storm-force winds in Dorset has been cut free by fire crews after he became trapped.

The man was taken to hospital with minor injuries following the incident on A37, near A356 Dorchester Road junction, at about 09:30 GMT.

Severe weather also caused fast ferry services from Weymouth and the Channel Islands to be cancelled until Thursday.

Across the county a number of roads were blocked by falling trees.

Broken leg

Trees fell on the A30 at Henstridge, Piddle Lane in Cerne Abbas; Verwood Road at Three Legged Cross, Longbury Hill Lane in Gillingham; outside the Red Lion Hotel in Winfrith Newburgh, at Duntish near Dorchester; Triscombe in Beaminster, East Stoke, Sixpenny Handley and A31 in Wimborne at the Roundhouse roundabout.

A car was severely damaged when it hit a fallen tree on the B3081 at Sixpenny Handley.

In Wimborne, a man was cut free from his car, and taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg, after it was in collision with another vehicle that had been hit by a fallen tree on the A31.

There have been no other reports of injuries and all roads have now been cleared.

Up to 8,500 properties in parts of Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire are without power, according to Southern Electric Power Distribution.

South West Trains and CrossCountry trains are experiencing delays of up to 90 minutes, between Bournemouth and Southampton, following reports of a fallen tree on the line at Brockenhurst.

South West Trains said high winds of up to 60mph are also affecting services making them subject to short-notice cancellation and delay until further notice.

Condor Ferries said fast ferry services would be cancelled until Thursday, but the all-weather ferry service between Portsmouth, Guernsey and Jersey was continuing to operate.

It added that "as many passengers as possible" were being transferred to this vessel to complete their journeys.

Portland Coastguard said several vessels had been forced to re-lay their anchors because of storm force 10 winds.
