Now, the catch. In the place of an airline logo is the logo of the travel portal concerned. The departure timing of the offered flight is a secret. But there are options-like flights that depart between 5 and 7am, 7.10 and 9.10am, etc. The duration of the flight is also listed, which was about two hours in this case, and so one knows that it will be a direct flight from Mumbai to Delhi. So far, three travel portals-makemytrip.com, yatra.com and via.com-have the scheme.
Travel industry insiders wondered if the carrier behind these dirt cheap deals was Kingfisher Airlines. For one, the supersaver fares are not available on routes not operated by Kingfisher anymore, like Mumbai-Indore, Mumbai-Bhubaneswar, Mumbai-Calicut. Then again, one ticket was bought under Yatra’s supersaver scheme for a February 12 Mumbai-Delhi flight. After Rs 4,515 was paid, the site said the flight has been booked on Kingfisher Airlines. But the two points do not conclusively prove that all the tickets offered under this blind booking scheme belong to Kingfisher Airlines. “We have no knowledge of any such scheme/fares,” a Kingfisher spokesperson said.
The ‘Makemytrip special’ page gives more information on this scheme, with one paragraph saying, “Why can’t I see the airline name or the exact departure/arrival time? As these are special, heavily discounted fares, our airline partners have restricted us from showing you the name of the airline and the exact time of departure/arrival. These will be shown to you right after making the payment.”
The exact time of departure, airline name and all other relevant details will be displayed on the e-ticket, payment invoice, etc, it said. While via.com could not be contacted, yatra.com and makemytrip.com declined to comment.
Incidentally, around 12pm on Thursday, the cheapest airfare on offer for a Mumbai-Delhi Friday flight was Rs 3,570. It was offered on ezeego1.co.in, a travel portal that did not offer this secret scheme. These fares were only available for Kingfisher Airline flights. The air tickets were not scarce in supply at that time. The said fare was available on Kingfisher flights departing from Mumbai at 6.05am, 8.10am, 10.25am, 11.20am, 9.20am, 4.40pm and 5.40pm. After Kingfisher, the second cheapest fare was way above at Rs 6356, offered by GoAir. But by 4pm, the Kingfisher fare had jumped to Rs 4,966. The GoAir fare stayed the same. By 6pm, the Kingfisher airfare was in the range of Rs 6,000.
